    Cheers for this video mate!

The heatgun technique worked great for fixing a bad GPU on a HP Pavillion dv series laptop computer.

@xclampfix Thanks for the thoughts. It may be merely lack of applying the heat long enough. After it RROD’s, you cool it down for an hour or so, and it will work again for a time. Need to get it to RROD and remember to grab the code on it next time…

@soonerdew Always hard to advise on fixes that don’t use my x-clamp kit (which I don’t sell anymore!) Nylon washer kits don’t last that long. Metal washer kits with a height of 1.05mm per washer are ideal. Having said that a lot of the time it’s the HANA chip (like in this vid) which goes wrong again and then you just heatgun again. I have had a fair few Xboxes where it just needed a little more heat to get it permanent. Last thing to do is the penny trick in case it’s the RAM on the underside.

  4. soonerdew says:

@xclampfix C can be either Celsius or Centigrade. Centigrade refers to the fact that the basic metric temperature scale goes from 0 to 100 (water’s boiling point in C).

    A temperature of 330C is about 625F.

Any suggestions for someone who has heat-gunned his XBOX MB twice, and it works for a while, but then fails again? I’ve replaced the clamps, reapplied the thermal paste, heat-gunned, and it works for a time, then fails…First time, it worked for about two months, thought I was home free,..

Did this along with renewing taking off the xclamps and using new bolts for the heat sinks and it’s worked perfectly, so far had it on for 5 hours! Actually used a single spring washer between motherboard and heat sinks, and covered a washer in insulating tape between bolt head and motherboard on back to ensure no short circuits. Worked great, and spring washer makes sure tension is kept up.

  6. xclampfix says:

@k1ngsander C is Celcius. (Could be Centigrade I guess but it’s not!) F would be Farenheit!

  7. k1ngsander says:

The 3 minutes on 330C is it celcius or fahrenheit? Cuz your from the usa

  8. xclampfix says:

@LastClapProductions Could be RAM. Try the penny fix (it’s on youtube somewhere!). 0102 is a general CPU/GPU/RAM error! Since 0022 is the HANA chip it sounds like a HANA/GPU issue but it might be a console with multiple problems. Check that no tiny resistor has fallen off the board also.

  9. xclampfix says:

@smithadele I lost count somewhere past 500. The fix works long term in conjunction with a good x-clamp kit and good thermal paste. My part 2 vid shows the kits I used to sell. Metal washers (m5 so 5mm hole, 10mm wide and 1.05mm thick) provide the right compression for a long term fix. Also helps to have a good airflow around it and no dust.

  10. LastClapProductions says:

Thanks for making this video, it sort of helped me out. My Xbox 360 had 0022 and after trying your heatgun method the secondary code changed to the more common 0102 error. I did everything in your video except for replacing the stock xclamps with bolts and washers. I’m pretty pissed off because I had the console reballed with 0102 and I’ve only had other errors since and now it has 0102 again.

  11. smithadele says:

how many of the boxs that you fix this way actually stay fixed? Just wondering because i used your method on a friends E74 and it worked a charm, but for how long that is the question

  12. xclampfix says:

@one2zerojigawat Nylon washer kits never last that long! You need 16 metal washers on the top (4 bolts on GPU and 4 on CPU and washers are stacked 2 on each on the topside of the board). My Part 2 video shows it clearly.

  13. SenoreQueso says:

My box doesn’t red-ring yet. It’ll turn on, play for about a minute, and then freeze. I get some artifacts on the screen and some weird noises, but it doesn’t shut down (even after a few minutes). If I just take everything off, clean off the old paste, and replace it with some good PC thermal paste, think it’ll get it going again? Or should I resort to this already?

    Thanks.

  14. MantisTobagganMD says:

@xclampfix thats what i figured, do an xclamp replacement and do a reflow. Thanks for the video

  15. xclampfix says:

@MantisTobagganMD putting on a decent x-clamp kit and maybe doing the penny trick as a preventative measure is the best way to get a lasting fix after heatgunning. The kits I used to sell were the best. Nowadays most eBay stuff is tat – avoid the ‘gold’ thermal pastes. Use one that is silver if not using the Antec white in my Part 2 vid, and of course… make sure you apply the kit as in my Part 2 video.

  16. MantisTobagganMD says:

how long will this fix last, im about to do it to 5 xboxs and re-sell them, i dont want them to break on the people who buy them

  17. xclampfix says:

@rmalagara Yes. Absolutely. The E73 error is easy to fix using my heatgun method.

  18. 03wighty says:

thanks so much it acttully works we did to penny trick as well!!!!

  19. rmalagara says:

YOur video is excellent. I fixed E74s with no trouble and they are running solid. Thank you. Question. (I own a video game store) I have an E73 on an xbox360. would this work for that or should I do somthing else. Thank you for your time.

  20. xclampfix says:

@aftmss The dry white marks that you get are very common on Xbox 360 boards and nothing to worry about – doesn’t affect operation. I think it’s the salts that are part of the manufacturing process – a no-clean flux type of thing that will show up sometimes when heatgunned.

And thanks, someone’s already said that I sound like Mark Kermode!

  21. xclampfix says:

@aftmss it does melt but should be a dry-melt if that makes sense – so you can just peel the stuff off. It shouldn’t stick anywhere but around the centre where you are directing the most heat so maybe heatgun is a bit high? Seems odd.

  22. xclampfix says:

@nicolaiaquilina Yes, it’s the GPU and CPU that are on top and most commonly go wrong. Only 4 RAM bricks on the bottom.

  23. xclampfix says:

@sixstringfretter Yes, to soften up the solder balls under the chips so they get sticky again and then hold the chips onto the m.board. Also reflows any solder cracks in the board and does the RAM too.
